Projects to do

Ship-repair work such as tank cleaning or hot work carries serious risks, and yards need checklists that turn long regulations into checks a supervisor can actually run.

Port statistics are published in long tables that few people read, and a clear dashboard could show cargo trends and the shift from ore to other trades at a glance.

Shipyards say they want more local suppliers, and small firms nearby want the work, but quality certifications, payment cycles and tender rules keep them apart.

Ports host thousands of seafarers a year who get little support ashore, and a welfare programme must balance needs, cost, who pays and what the port can actually run.

Shipyards say they cannot find skilled welders, fitters and marine electricians, while training institutes say their students struggle to get placed, and both may be partly right.

Freight forwarders handle many shipments a week, and a single mismatch between documents can hold cargo at the port, so checking must be consistent and fast.

Some river crossings carry vehicles slowly or not at all, and a roll-on roll-off service could save travel time, but it needs vessels, jetties, crew and enough users to pay its way.

A repair yard with one dry dock earns only when a vessel is in it, and gaps between bookings, overruns and monsoon slowdowns quietly eat its year.
